Making Exercise Fun

Do remember when you were a kid, you’d play all day, running, biking, kicking and jumping. That was exercise, but you never thought of it as that, because you enjoyed it!!

Put joy back in exercise. If you do what you enjoy, then, like a kid, it doesn’t feel like exercise. We need to blend fitness into our life rather than try to blend our life into fitness!

Aerobic activity is vital for a healthy heart and it keeps you fit by reeving up your metabolism.  They key to making exercise a part of your lifestyle is to make it fun!  After all, who wants to do something they don’t enjoy? That is why diets and exercise routines often fail. Aerobics still holds a stigma from the 1980′s of going to the gym and learning complicated dance routines or stepping up and down various level platforms until we work up a sweat. There are many ways to incorporate aerobics into your daily life that are not only simple, but pleasurable. The key to maintaining any exercise regimen is to enjoy doing it! How to start:

  • A good start to initiating an exercise routine is to make it convenient. Start by taking a brisk walk after dinner. It helps digestion and clears your mind for better sleep and it’s much more pleasurable to get out and breathe in fresh air.

  • Mix up activities to keep it interesting.

  • Walking the dog gets you moving while you get a chore done.

  • Walk or run the beach. There’s a treasure trove of sea glass and seashells to collect.

  • Cycle to the corner store rather than drive, You run an errand and benefit as well.

  • Try to incorporate socializing, family and conversation into activities.

  • Take your spouse or your child for a run. You'll both benefit from fresh air and aerobic activity, plus it allows you one-on-one time to talk or listen. More is shared when people are relaxed.

  • There's always a lot of activity at the park. Bring a few friends with you or make new ones. Enjoy conversation while you bike the neighborhood, run the park or hike the trails.

  • You don’t have to limit exercise to walking or cycling. Join a touch football league or start your own neighborhood team. It’s a fun way to get exercise and camaraderie all in one. And you won’t feel bad breaking open a brew after the game!

  • Summertime is perfect for a run on the beach. Get a great workout and a tan all-in-one.

  • Take the kids on a treasure hunt. A stroll in the park can turn up interesting flowers, birds and trees. It is a fun distraction and before you know it, you’ve walked an hour!

  • Cycling is not limited to the park or neighborhood streets. If you enjoy nature and adventure, go off road and try mountain biking. It is an exhilarating experience that burns calories and gets the heart pumping.

  • I run with a group of friends and from time-to-time, we would add a game to make things interesting. Running in single file, the last runner would have to sprint to the head of line singing their favorite tune and then pace the line until the next runner repeated this. Besides the fact that it's fun, we're working fast and slow twitch muscles in the process!

  • Call the girls and go for a swim at your local YMCA or gym. If it’s summer, take a swim in the pool. Throw in a few laps for a great aerobic workout.

Anything you do is more fun with friends, Before you get done with conversation, laughter and reminiscing, you will have exercised an easy hour away. You will walk away feeling healthier and happier that you shared time with friends.

Whatever you choose to do doesn’t matter as long as you are moving. The key is to incorporate what you like into a healthy exercise.
